1948-2008 The Lotus 60th anniversary.
HETHEL, England — Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman built his first racing car in 1948, eventually founding Lotus Engineering in 1952. Chapman suffered a fatal heart attack in 1982, and the little car company that won seven Formula 1 world championships under his direction since changed hands several times, eventually winding up in the hands of Malaysia's state-owned Proton.
Although the company technically is only 56 years old, Proton wants to mark the 60th anniversary of Chapman's first car. Therefore, the company is inviting Lotus lovers from around the world to join the September 14 celebration at the old RAF air strip here that has been Lotus headquarters since 1966. In attendance will be Chapman's widow, Hazel and son Clive.
Group Lotus says it has planned "a variety of high-profile events" this year to "pay homage to the heritage of the marque." The official birthday party in September 14 is expected to draw more than 15,000 visitors.
Next trip is in England with the Thai Lotus Cars Club, let's celebrate in September 2008 the 60th anniversary of Lotus and the 5th anniversary of our club.
